Surprises Can Be Good, But Aren't Always

by Your Webmaster

Andrea knew that there was something wrong as soon as she woke up. She knew it was a school day, but her alarm clock was not buzzing, and her mother was not in the doorway yelling at her to “get out of bed, or be late for school!” She was never the first one up. But, there were no clinking dishes in the kitchen and there was no water running in the bathroom. In fact, the whole house sounded perfectly, eerily silent.

Confused, she turned her head to look at her clock. The clock's digital display was blank. "The power must be out," Andrea thought. "I wonder if I'm late for school." She rolled onto her side, and lifted the bottom edge of the blinds that covered the window above her bed. It was very bright outside, much brighter than when she normally got up for school.

Worried that she might miss—or even have already missed—her math test, she jumped out of bed and ran down the hall to see why her mother had not woken her.
